My one and only antenna is a very slopy full size G5RV without the coaxial section and 400 ohm ladder feed direct from apex to a MFJ auto-tuner though even better to something like an old-fashioned KW or Johnson matchbox.
Let’s have no illusions about the G5RV except it is probably the best HF bands antenna out there that meets the pockets of most amateurs if they have the space to put it up and if not the half size as a reasonable compromise.
Louis Varney’s idea was to get a reasonable SWR over the all the HF bands but his original design was to a valve PA using a pi-network tuner and as Bernie’s link points out the 70 ohm end section is not suitable for today’s solid state transceivers requiring further matching. I prefer my one single ladder feed which probably moves it theoretically away from pure G5RV.
Results? Good dx when there are openings especially on 10 and 15 . Weekly data and ssb scheds to the UK on 20 and a good all rounder for CW hf contesting especially European..
If you’re still not convinced and do have the space to put up a G5RV plus a few bawbees to fork out may I suggest a feed -point auto tuner such as SGC.
