SFS – now £600.00
Thanks to Bobby P and Cambell for visiting Saturday to fix the problem we had with raising my tower. After removing the top section, the remaining sections appeared to lift FB, and putting the top section back in, without appearing to change the wiring, the tower now seems to lift FB. !!!
Cambell has also now answered my earlier questions.
Latest from me:
1. Cambell visiting Sat at 2pm, we will work on (hopefully) freeing off tower sections so the tower raises as it’s supposed to.
2. Has anyone got a portable gas heater they could bring? I’m thinking back to 2012 when we were all huddled around a small 2KW heater which didnt really do much. I’ll bring a Halogen heater if that helps.
3. Cambell, assume you have spare guy ropes than can go on my tower (attached to cage)?
4. Cambell, cant remember if you have a stub to go under the 15m tower rotator? I remember cutting 2 poles for this but cant remember if you have one.

Bob/Cambell, I had a quick look yesterday afternoon.
Since the shack frame was added, you can now only slightly angle the tower downward so it’s definitely a 2-man job to get the sections safely out, with at least 1 on step ladders (depending on height).
I think we’ll just need to play this by ear. Will probably have some spare time next weekend, or even an hour or so weeknights (usually about 5.30 till dark), provided I know in advance.
Not sure yet when I’ll be free to work on it anyway so will just do so when I can.
Cambell, I plan to collect my tower tomorrow a.m. As early as possible. Provided I have time free, I’ll remove the top 2 sections as iirc, this was tested previously and the 2nd bottom section lifts up fine.
15m 4ele Yagi repaired today. Also did a bit of contact cleaning as some joints havent been done since the antenna was originally built about 10 years ago. Just need to swap over 1 section of the boom and it’s ready to go (ran out of daylight).
MM0CCC. Friday morning ( just after you guys, as I’ll probably have
to do the school run) until strip-down Monday. Yagi erector, specialises in 15m in 40′ pipe masts that don’t fall down. WLTM many qso’s on all bands. May disappear at random for a shower.
Will collect 15m yagi from DXC QTH during week in order to commence repairs.
My tower is available for 10m but will probably need the wire rope removed and re-strung, section by section, in order to troubleshoot the tension problem. Otherwise, its 25′ for the weekend.
Great score everyone, well done.
I don’t have ours to hand but am pretty sure it’s quite a bit below that that as our mults were way down on previous years . On the plus side the simple antenna setup we used this year appeared to work very well and I’ll definitely be trying this again.
GM5O were a massive signal with us on all bands but we never figured out exactly where they were on Orkney Mainland.
Thanks to all who came on to work GM2T at the weekend. It is appreciated. It all went well and the WX wasnt too bad either. Lovely site too. We finished with 381 QSO’s, 151 locator squares, and 37DXCC. Nice DXCC included EA6, EA8, EA9, C3,IT9, Z3, E7, T7,CN, IS0, IH9.
Will post a few pics later if I can remember how to do it.
See you at VHF Field Day.
Bump – still for sale.
with the Blackpool trip taking place the weekend before, I’m not sure if anyone’s planning on coming to GMDX this year but if you are, just to warn you, no double or triple rooms left so my booking looks like being up the road at premier inn.
As already confirmed to Cambell, I will be at a wedding in Englandshire Wed/Th/Fri, and not heading back to GM until some time on Saturday. I will try to get down to the site by Saturday evening but if I´m home late, it´ll be first thing Sunday.
Due to my lack of antenna setup and operating, feel free to put me in whenever on Sunday as hopefully I´ll be reasonably awake.
As things stand, I believe I´m providing the 15m antenna/mast/hardware/coax. This can either be passed on to a ¨volunteer¨ to take possession off earlier in the week, or I can drop it all of at DXC QTH. If someone can take it, it can all go on roof bars if need be, with the base, clamps, ropes etc going inside a car.
One thing I would say is whoever puts the yagi up, if at all possible, put it at 40′ rather than 30´. Quite often if we are short of time, I have put this at 30’instead of 40´. I did so last year and although the band was heaving, I did notice that the JA´s were not that strong despite several people reporting big sigs from them in the online write-ups. I can only conclude this was the lack of height affecting long-haul propagation so even a 10′ increase should help.
See you all there. Looking forward to it.
OK Guys, Will try and spend a day cutting and fitting the panels when I get back from IOTA. In the meantime, the floor has been fitted and is covered with a tarpaulin, although weve not had rain here for about a fortnight and it’s not forecast to rain for a week atm.
