I think you may have mis-read my previous post, Bill.

My concern with the FT847  is on HF.  But 144/432MHz performance is excellent.  We use one at CPSARC every year for VHF Field Day, and used to use one on 432MHz as well.

The Ft847 was designed for Sat Use with full duplex. I dont know much about working through satellites but recall when the FT847 came out, a lot of people bought them for this purpose.

Bill, I have an FT847.  I bought it ONLY for use on 144MHz and 432MHz.

I do not rate it at all on HF, less so on LF, even with a narrow SSB filter added in.

I’d say its decent on 50MHz, and mine has had a couple of modifications done which make a big improvement to the 70MHz RX (it’s deaf as a post on 70MHz in it’s raw form) and TX (now puts out full 100w, whereas it only does 10w as standard).

There is a mod that can be done to improve the HF performance that brings it close to some of the high-spec HF rigs out there, but the roofing filter you need is hard to find, needs a custom board from Inrad, and involves surface-mount work that is beyond me so I havent bothered.

    Hope this is of use.

Thanks for your customary pictures and accompanying comments Geoff.   A great weekend with good radio cndx, despite the apparent lack of mults.  No big hardware problems either, and the craic was good too.

Likewise, I could do with doubling up with someone.  I have a small tent but my feet touch the bottom of it, not great in cold WX.

Update: Thanks to Bob IKT/Cambell DXC who visited to help put the tower back together today.  Just needs a few tweaks but is already usable for CQWW.  Looking great, and will have the final touches done in the Spring-time.

No special requests from me either, Geoff.  “You don’t have to like it, you just have to eat it” !!

Tower now back at my QTH, what a transformation, thanks very much, Geoff.  It’s been some slog especially paint stripping the tower sections but this has made it all worthwhile.  I’ve got a bit of one section still to be done.  B&Q first thing for more NitroMors and I’ll try and get as much of this done as possible before reassembly.

Geoff, will come through Friday evening then. Missus using car in afternoon but will make sure I get it back in plenty time for 6pm curfew.

Cambell/Bob P looks like Saturday then.  Assuming we manage to get it back to working order on the day, can it be put back in storage?  Not v popular at bringing it back to driveway for the fortnight until CQWW SSB.

OK Folks, re my trailer/tower I now have at least part of next weekend free, so will try and get the tower collected this week.  Just need to swap over tow ball for NATO hitch on my car, should be OK.  Assuming I manage this, anyone able to help out reassembling the tower?  Sunday the more likely day for this, although I’ll keep a close eye on the WX during the week and if Saturday is better, will try and swap.  I still have the original wires so unless anyone thinks its essential to replace them, we can just use them and replace sometime in the new-year.
